UKBTM has patented a "Method for
upgrading the chassis of T-72 and T-90 type tanks to create a tank support
combat vehicle (BMPT) based on it."
Apparently, this
upgrade of the old T-72 (A) into a BMPT will be undertaken at UVZ.
What can be said – the
idea is reasonable. Even their flawed BMPT has some value, and converting an
outdated T-72 (T-72A) into a BMPT may be more beneficial than upgrading it.
A proposed BMPT-72
variant differs by the absence of two forward grenade launchers in the hull and
a crew of 3 instead of 5. The method for upgrading the chassis of T-72 and/or
T-90 type tanks to create a BMPT involves the following actions (see illustrations):
- Removal of the tank’s turret;
- Dismantling of the rotating conveyor;
- Installation of torsion bars at twist angles ensuring the BMPT’s specified forward tilt;
- Equipping the chassis (1) with an adapter ring (2) to connect the tank hull with the BMPT combat module (3);
- Replacing fuel tank racks with tanks (8) to increase the armored fuel capacity;
- Installing a BMPT combat module with workstations for the commander and weapon operator, equipped with protective covers (9) for anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) launchers and a rotating contact device to ensure BMPT functionality;
- Placing equipment fencing (7) to collect links from the automatic cannons and machine gun belts of the BMPT;
- Equipping the combat module’s shoulder strap with protective screens (4) featuring built-in dynamic protection on supports (5);
- Placing storage boxes (6) for spare parts, tools, and accessories (ZIP);
- Equipping the driver-mechanic’s station with a hatch (10) featuring an emergency opening mechanism;
- Adding a diesel generator unit (11) with necessary electrical equipment;
- Installing a rearview camera to display imagery on the driver-mechanic’s video observation device.
However, a BMPT without a grenade launcher… its weapon system ends up being inferior to upgraded BMP-2s. Another drawback preventing the creation of a proper vehicle this way is the retention of the old forward fuel tank group without placing them in isolated compartments.
