ANNOTATION of the work "Organization of serial
production of new medium tanks T-64A".
In pursuance of the Decrees of the CPSU Central
Committee and the USSR Council of Ministers of 17.IX.1961 No. 141-58,
4.VII.1962 No. 698-291, 28.II.1963 No. 395-141, 30.XII.1966 No. 982-321,
15.VII.1967 No. 302-266, 20.V.1968 No. 360-137, at the Kharkov Transport
Engineering Plant named after V.A. Malyshev, production was prepared and serial
production of new medium tanks T-64 was organized with a subsequent transition
in 1968 to the production of T-64A tanks with a more powerful weapons complex
and improved tactical and technical characteristics. The organization of
production and serial production of new medium tanks, the transition from one
modification to another, continuous design refinement of units and parts were
carried out without stopping production. The main direction in solving these
tasks was the parallel implementation of work on the development and refinement
of the machine design, technological preparation of production, organization of
production on temporary areas, reconstruction of existing workshops in the
conditions of operating production and capital construction.
To fulfill the tasks of organizing serial
production of new medium tanks and spare parts for them, continuously
increasing their output, design solutions were developed and the production of
T-64A tanks was placed on temporary areas, which constitute 59% of the approved
design assignment.
In this regard, in order to free up areas for
tank production, a partial re-planning and relocation of the production of
heavy artillery tractors and heavy diesels was carried out.
Specialized workshops were organized: running
gear, transmission manufacturing, assembly and welding of hulls and turrets,
loading mechanisms and turrets assembled, fittings and pipe, assembly and
welding of thin-sheet parts, electroplating, including comprehensively
mechanized workshops - 9 and 25 sections.
Work was carried out to create a reliable
system of incoming inspection of component units and assemblies, ensuring high
quality of products.
To ensure the fulfillment of the set tasks,
production preparation was carried out comprehensively and at an accelerated
pace. 15,917 technological processes were developed and introduced into
production.
According to the decision of the scientific and
technical council of the Ministry of 16.IV.1970, the designed level of
technology meets modern requirements. 40,480 items of technological tooling
were designed, manufactured and introduced into production, including 110 items
of test benches. The coefficient of equipping with fixtures for machined parts
of the tank is 5.51. In the workshops of tank production, there are 116 flow
and variable-flow lines, including 5 automatic, 189 special machines. The share
of special machines is 16.2%, finishing machines 16%, which exceeds the
industry indicators for this production.
The level of mechanization of welding works on
armored hulls is 93%. There are 192 installations for mechanized welding in
production.
The level of mechanization of production
processes is: for machining 85.9%, assembly 68.2%, cold stamping 79.8%.
In metallurgical production, progressive
methods of manufacturing blanks have been introduced: precision stamping on
hot-stamping crank presses, rolling machines, horizontal forging machines and
hammers, casting parts in permanent molds, investment casting, shell mold
casting. Thus, 82% of casting names and 69.7% of hot stampings are manufactured
by progressive methods.
For the period from 1966 to 1972, due to the
introduction of progressive technology, the weight of tank blanks was reduced
by
In order to ensure reliability and durability
of the tank, reduce labor intensity and increase labor productivity, new
technological processes have been widely introduced into production:
dimensional-finish strengthening treatment of
highly loaded parts: torsion shafts, track pins, road wheels, friction discs,
etc., which increased their durability by 2-3 times, diamond smoothing of
critical parts of the gearbox allowed improving quality and increasing the
service life of the unit by 2 times. The achieved level of diamond tool usage
is 75,000 carats per year.
Surfacing with a special electrode of the drive
sprocket teeth increased the durability of the drive wheel by 3-4 times, etc.
As a result of the implementation of technical
and organizational measures in serial production, the labor intensity of
manufacturing the tank for the period from 1.1.1969 to 1.7.72 was reduced by
31%. The cost of the tank during this period decreased by 24%.
Tests of 15 T-64A tanks conducted by the USSR
Ministry of Defense in 1971 received a positive assessment. In this connection,
the USSR Ministry of Defense considers it necessary to increase the production
of T-64A tanks by 2.5 times compared to the 1972 target.
Along with this, taking into account the
positive results of the tests conducted, the plant made proposals to increase
the warranty service life of the T-64A tank from 3000 to
