An important date in the history of tanks. February 17, 1961

An important date in the history of tanks.  February 17, 1961 all works on heavy tanks in the USSR were cancelled.  This day was an officiall start of works on the object “432” (T-64 tank) , missile tanks and BMP-1.
On February 17, 1961, the Central Committee of the CPSU and the USSR Council of Ministers issued a decree according to which work on heavy tanks with artillery weapons (“Object 277” from LKZ, “Object 770” from ChTZ) was cancelled.
Heavy tank design bureaus – the ChTZ and LKZ now were focused on developing medium tanks with guided missile weapon.
This resulted in number of interesting, but not viable projects - “Object 287”, “Object 288”, “Object 772”, “Object 775” (crew of 2 people in the tower, innovative protection solutions, including the first universal design of the ERA).
